AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders Statement on the Voting Rights Advancement Act

AFSCME is committed to ensuring that our leaders in Congress today honor that sacrifice and protect the rights they secured for future generations.

Washington, D.C. —

AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders issued the following statement regarding the introduction of the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2015 by Sen. Patrick Leahy and Rep. John Lewis:

“There is nothing more fundamental to who we are as Americans than our right to cast a vote. Yet in 2015 we find that basic freedom under relentless attack from political opportunists and the Supreme Court, which two years ago gutted key provisions of the landmark Voting Rights Act. Yesterday, Senator Leahy and Representative Lewis introduced the Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore and safeguard every American citizen’s right to cast a ballot.

Fifty years ago, proud men and women in this country marched arm-in-arm, enduring vicious attacks, to ensure every citizen could vote. From their unwavering determination and sacrifice came the Voting Rights Act. AFSCME is committed to ensuring that our leaders in Congress today honor that sacrifice and protect the rights they secured for future generations.”
