Obama’s Paid Sick Leave Initiative ‘Common Sense Solution’

Washington, D.C. —

AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s proposal to offer paid sick leave for working Americans:

“AFSCME applauds President Obama’s plan for federal workers to use 6 weeks of advanced, paid sick leave to care for a newborn or adopted child, take care of sick family members or other sick leave needs, and his call for Congress to act so that all employers offer this benefit. Paid sick leave would help millions of families, reduce the high cost of health care and eliminate an unnecessary drag on our country’s economic recovery. It’s a common sense solution to a serious problem.

“Nobody on the workforce should have to worry about their livelihood in the event she or he, or a loved one, gets sick. AFSCME has long fought for paid sick leave to be a basic workers’ right in this country, as it is in other advanced nations.”
