ACU Third National Corrections Congress

By

October 3-5, Austin Texas

The AFSCME Corrections Congress offers corrections workers from across the country a chance to learn and network in sunny, lively Austin, Texas. You can attend workshops on gang control and handling stress; talk to men and women working in your field; learn about federal legislation from AFSCME experts; and acquire the skills you need to be an effective leader, lobbyist and advocate. The weekend-long congress will offer these opportunities and more. Please download and mail or fax in the registration form and join your fellow COs at AFSCME’s third national Corrections Congress.

"COs from across the country get together, meet, and compare the way they do business in different states. It’s helpful to get new ideas, to learn about things that can be brought back to your own state."

Gary Lonzo, sergeant, Green Bay Correctional Institution, president of Wisconsin Council 24 and chair of the ACU Advisory Board

"I would recommend this congress to anyone and everyone. To leaders whose states are contracting out, to anyone who lives in a state where resources are drying up, in a state where inmate population is changing. To anyone who wants to stay ahead of the curve. The speakers and the workshops prepare you. When things come up, they don’t blindside you."

Tina Turner-Morfitt, correctional counselor, Oregon Corrections Intake Center and first vice president of Oregon Council 75

"A valuable chance to exchange ideas, receive suggestions, seek advice. With the changing climate in the prison system, it’s important to stay on the cutting edge of security, staffing and privatization issues."

Mike Bogulski, lieutenant, Erie County (N.Y.) Correctional Facility, president of Local 815 of CSEA/AFSCME Local 1000.
