  • Y2K glitches may affect jails built from 1985 to 1995, a White House working group on Year 2000 issues has concluded. The Washington Post reported July 27 that jails built before 1985 are mostly free of devices that could be affected by a computer glitch, and those built after 1995 use technology less vulnerable to the Y2K bug. While manual overrides ensure prison doors won’t open Jan. 1, some prisons could be plagued by inoperative perimeter cameras and monitors. COs can expect to work a lot of overtime over the holidays.
  • Ohio’s first privately operated state prison will be run by CiviGenics, a Massachusetts-based company. The 552-bed minimum-security prison in northeast Ohio will house felony drunk-driving offenders and others with alcohol and drug abuse problems. It will open in February. CiviGenics also runs the Columbiana (Ohio) County Jail.
