Minnesota – Right-to-Work (for Less) Measure Off Table

A ‘right-to-work-for-less’ amendment is tabled, for now, thanks in part to members of Council 5 and Council 65 who lobbied their state legislators to challenge an anti-worker agenda that included the measure.

“A lot of energy was spent on this issue,” said Council 65 Exec. Dir. Steve Preble. “We now have to continue with that spirit through the elections in November.”

If the anti-worker measure had been signed into law,  voters in November would be given the opportunity to decide whether workers covered by collective bargaining contracts can avoid paying their fair share of the costs of representation.

Behind this effort to undermine worker solidarity are corporations who want to weaken unions. They’re led by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) which pushes right-to-work as a legislative priority. In February, Indiana became the 23rd state to adopt the anti-worker measure.

In April, the House voted overwhelmingly to table the measure. AFSCME continues to monitor the situation and will be ready to march back into action if corporate-backed lawmakers attempt to resurrect the bill.
