Union Do's
By
Locally and nationally, labor found new ways to spread its message of empowerment throughout the nation.
- Some 1,500 young people took to the streets in June, July and August as Union Summer volunteers. They demonstrated, organized and just had fun. Beats sweltering at home any year.
- Iowa Council 61 brought in the largest amount of PEOPLE money in a single event held by an affiliate. The council raffled off a Harley-Davidson-and raised $21,799.
- The CSEA work force is "The Heart of New York," according to an extensive advertising campaign launched in the fall by New York's Civil Service Employees Association CSEA/AFSCME Local 1000. A series of advertisements around this theme includes a jingle whose chorus goes like this: "We're your work force/ A vital part of New York/ CSEA!/ We're your work force/ We're the heart of New York/ CSEA!"
- Why fly from one island to the next when you can surf? Hawaii Government Employees Association HGEA/AFSCME Local 152 has set up HGEANet, an Internet provider service, to keep members in touch with their union, each other and the wide, wide world. For $15 a month, members get unlimited Net time and e-mail service. Visit HGEA to check it out. With over 2,000 people signed up, they're already making a splash.
