U.S. Congress or Bust
LATROBE, PEENSYLVANIA
St. Vincent College junior Gary Stofko has the makings of a good politician. And with financial help from AFSCME, this 20-year-old tennis ace is well on his way.
Stofko is the 1998 recipient of AFSCME’s Jerry Clark Memorial award. He will receive $10,000 a year for his junior and senior years and work as a summer intern in the Political Action Department at International headquarters in the nation’s capital. His name was picked by lottery in the annual contest from among the many applicants who are children of AFSCME members.
“I believe I can represent people in the political arena better than anyone else,” says Stofko.
“Both my wife and I are delighted Gary won the scholarship,” says his father, Richard Stofko, a member of Local 1986 (Council 84) who works as a revenue agent at the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.
For the past three years, Stofko has started in both singles and doubles for the college men’s tennis team. “I’m building a foundation so that in the long run, I will be the very best I can be.”
