Dr. King in L.A.
LOS ANGELES
His memory and spirit, that is. The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Observance is being held here this month (Jan. 13-17).
The event unfolds under the umbrella of the AFL-CIO, with its constituent unions participating as individual entities. They are working with the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, in the words of AFL-CIO Pres. John J. Sweeney, "to carry on Dr. King's legacy through a program of education, community action, direct action and service."
This year's direct action focuses on the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees union and nine L.A. hotels that have been dealing unfairly with its members.
Affirming AFSCME's whole hearted support of the five-day event, President McEntee declared, "There is no more important modern American legacy than that of Martin Luther King. We at AFSCME are proud to take part in the holiday observance."
