Freedom of Speech

By

LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO

New Mexico State University students and employees marched into the administration building last fall to deliver a petition — signed by more than 1,500 students — defending the workers' right to unionize with AFSCME. This followed a demonstration in which students wore gags to protest the university's efforts to silence union supporters. Management had forbidden staff to discuss their effort at work, even during lunch and on breaks. But more than 100 workers took part in brown-bag discussions about health insurance premiums and ways of effecting change through their union.
