Fighting for the Future

By

Talk about momentum!

When over 4,000 AFSCME activists from across the nation gather in Hawaii for the 33rd International Convention, August 24-28, they will celebrate major victories in organizing and political action. The nurses of Sharp HealthCare — the largest group of nurses ever organized under the National Labor Relations Act — recently concluded their three-year organizing campaign by signing a contract with management. And AFSCME spearheaded Labor’s successful effort in California to defeat Proposition 226, the “Paycheck Deception” initiative.

But the Convention will be a time for education as much as celebra-tion. AFSCME activists will learn from these and other victories how to fight extremists who would privatize our jobs, reduce our benefits, jeopardize our safety and silence our political voices.

Every AFSCME member has a role to play in this battle. The following special section not only provides a sense of the Convention program, it will help AFSCME members around the nation join in the struggle ahead — and share in the victories.

Together, AFSCME activists and members are “Fighting for the Future.”
