Union Membership Good for Your Health

By

You already knew union membership was good for your health. Now a study by the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) confirms it.

Nearly 94 percent of union workers between the ages of 18 and 64 had employer-based health care coverage, compared to 70 percent for non-union workers, according to EBRI, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization.

Union workers were “uniformly found to have higher levels of health care coverage across the whole range of the examined job characteristics,” the study found.

The study also disclosed that less than 4 percent of the nation’s 18.2 million union workers (as of March 1996) were uninsured, while more than 18 percent of non-union workers were uninsured.
