Dr. King Remembered
MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE
AFSCME Pres. Gerald W. McEntee participated in the annual commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death. McEntee described the event that brought King to Memphis as 1,300 sanitation workers striking “for their work to be recognized with dignity. Many of them wore the ‘I am a man’ signs that have become emblazoned in our memories.” Marchers through downtown Memphis with McEntee included AFSCME Local 1733 Pres. Willie Joe Alexander and Memphis Councilwoman Tajuan Stout Mitchell.
