Convention '02: Full Speed Ahead

By

"Anyone who wants to pick a fight with an engaged union member is going to get a fight," warns Pres. Gerald W. McEntee as he sets the stage for AFSCME's 35th International Convention in Las Vegas.

In addition to celebrating the union's organizing victories, the week-long Convention will focus primarily on AFSCME's mission and key priorities — including organizing, fighting budget battles and beating back privatization.

"Our mission is not just to improve the workplace for our members," says McEntee. "We also want to build good union members who are actively engaged and prepared to fight our battles ahead." The Bush anti-worker agenda will draw attention as we prepare for an election year that will determine the balance of power in Washington. Members will point out how administration policies have silenced their voices.

To build a sense of solidarity, community and possibilities for the near future, several rank-and-file members, along with elected officials from across the country, will also address the Convention. Confirmed speakers include International Association of Fire Fighters General Pres. Harold Schaitberger; invited speakers, three governors and two gubernatorial candidates.
