Money for Scholars
Looking for help in getting more education? Here are three scholarship offers that could be just the ticket:
Jerry Clark Memorial Scholarship — Awarded to a single college sophomore majoring in political science, with the winner selected by lot from applicants who meet these other requirements: child or financially dependent grandchild of an AFSCME member; grade point average of 3.0 or better; student at an accredited college or university. The winner will receive $10,000 for each of his or her junior and senior years of study plus an opportunity to intern with the International's Political Action Department. Deadline: application postmarked by July 1.
Union Plus National Labor College Scholarship — a new offering from Union Privilege. Valued at $25,000, this is the largest scholarship UP has ever offered and the largest available to students at the National Labor College. Applicants must be enrolled at the NLC and must be dues-paying union members or staff employees of an AFL-CIO-affiliated organization. The college is located at the George Meany Center for Labor Studies in Silver Spring, Md. For more details or to request an application, contact the NLC Office of Student Services at (301) 431-5404. Deadline varies.
Nadra Floyd Memorial Scholarships — Named in honor of the late, longtime AFSCME leader and also for study at the National Labor College (see above). There are four awards. They are open to all AFSCME members and staff "who desire to increase their leadership skills and to assist in the further development of the trade union movement" and who are students at or applicants to the college. Winners will receive $1,000 twice a year for two years of study.
Contestants must submit an essay about what AFSCME has contributed to the labor or social justice movement in this country. He/she must also submit letters of recommendation from their local union president or council director/president and from one other person in the community. Winners will be notified by Oct. 31 of this year. Deadline: application postmarked by Sept. 30.
