Close to 5,000 AFSCME members of Council 31 — the biggest turnout yet this year — marched on the state capitol on May 7 to protest imminent layoffs and facility closures. The next day, AFSCME scored a legislative win when lawmakers voted to reject one of Gov. George Ryan's cost-cutting measures — a plan to privatize prison food services and inmate commissaries.
