CBTU Hosts "Milestone" 25th Anniversary Convention
Washington, D.C.
The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) will convene its 25th Annual Convention Thursday, May 23 through Monday, May 27 at the Fontainebleau Hilton Resort and Spa in Miami.
It is expected to be the largest CBTU convention in the organization's history with over 2,500 participants including key representatives from labor, government, religious, and community groups rallying around this year's theme: "Labor and Minorities: Mobilizing to Impact the Political Agenda."
CBTU Pres. William Lucy called the upcoming event an "historic milestone"— one that will represent "a testament to the vision of those courageous trade unionists who established the organization and the dedicated commitment of all those who have helped build on that foundation.
"The 1996 convention will occur at what will be a most critical juncture for labor and minorities in an effort to impact the political agenda that will shape the November elections and define the future economic and social vitality of our communities," said Lucy who also serves as AFSCME secretary-treasurer.
He added that the organization's challenge will be one of "crafting a message and putting forth an agenda that accurately reflects the needs and concerns of working people, poor, senior citizens, youth, women, and the underserved of our society." Convention participants will be housed at the Fontainebleau Hotel as well as the Doral Ocean Beach Resort.
The CBTU Convention Call has been mailed out across the country. For further information, call CBTU offices at (202) 429-1203 or write CBTU National Office, PO Box 66268, Washington DC 20035-6268.
