An AFSCME Hero
HYATTSVILLE, MARYLAND
When fire rages out of control, adrenalin pumps swiftly through the veins of a bystander. That was the case last December with James Bishop of Greenbelt, Md., and Local 2250.
Bishop, who works as a plumber for the Prince George’s County board of education, was sitting in a parked vehicle at a Hyattsville middle school. He noticed smoke pouring from a house nearby. He raced into the house and escorted two people from it, then returned to help put out the fire.
Something more than humanitarian instinct was at work, however: Bishop is a member of the Greenbelt Volunteer Fire Department.
