"Mr. Rank & Filer"
BEVERLY HILLS
AFSCME recently honored Raymond Marin, a longtime steward at the Santa Monica Area Office of Local 685 (Council 36), with a "roast" at the Friars Club here. Marin, retiring after 35 years as a Los Angeles County Probation Officer, distinguished himself in numerous ways. To his colleagues, he was "Mr. Rank and Filer"; to his union, a man it could count on: "He was there from the beginning, before there was a collective bargaining law in California," says John Seferian, chairman of AFSCME’s Judicial Panel, who presented the award. "At any meeting, rally or strike, Ray would be the featured speaker. He was the heart and soul of the local." Present at the roast were judges, former probation department directors and former probationers whose lives were changed by Marin’s counseling.
