When Harry Met Alice

By

LOS ANGELES

Famed entertainer Harry Belafonte greeted Alice Goff at the Southern Christian Leadership Council's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Dinner held here recently. Goff, president of both Council 36 and Local 3090, received the Rosa Parks Award, which goes to women who are recognized as outspoken community leaders. In 2002, Goff was a key member of a clergy/labor coalition that thwarted an attempt by the San Fernando Valley and Hollywood to secede from the city of Los Angeles. In 2003, Goff and members of the coalition led a successful voter drive to block passage of Proposition 54, which could have opened the door to discrimination in employment, as well as enrollment in state agencies and colleges.
