AFSCME: Shareholder Watchdog

In addition to electing trustees to pension boards, AFSCME's program to protect members' retirement security encompasses a special International Union team that works to reform bad board practices. The team's efforts prompted Pensions & Investments magazine to declare that if a Shareholder of the Year award existed, it should go to AFSCME — for "harnessing its power ... to become the dominant force shaping corporate governance."
