AFSCME in New Mexico

By

It’s About Dignity & Respect

Bearing 650 signatures from their co-workers, New Mexico State University (NMSU) employees from AFSCME Local 2393 (Council 18) took their struggle to Santa Fe — the state’s capitol — in January. NMSU management has refused to bargain over pay ever since workers formed their union in May. To dramatize their struggle, a “speak-out” was staged as activists highlighted 20 poster-size photos of their co-workers asking “Why doesn’t my vote count at NMSU?” Their actions paid off with individual commitments from 10 legislators, NMSU regents and the governor’s office all promising to intervene. Recently, NMSU’s labor board ordered university authorities to bargain with our members so they can finally settle their first contract. Photo: Troy Mickens
