AFSCME Across America: Organizing for Power

From state to state, workers are organizing with AFSCME for a stronger voice on the job. Here are some recent victories:

California

Two employee groups totaling 500 members have affiliated with Local 2703 (Council 57). One, the 350-member Madera County Employees Association, consists of clerical and technical employees of the county's Superior Court; the other is the 150-member City of Clovis Employees Association, which includes clerical and technical workers, and bus drivers.

Florida

Seventy-six administrative em-ployees of Oakland Park, just north of Fort Lauderdale, and 42 city workers in Williston, “Gateway to the Nature Coast,” have joined Council 79.

Maryland

A 365-member unit of employees of the Prince George's County Community College has joined Council 67. They include campus police officers, administrative, clerical, technical environmental and facilities services workers.

Michigan

Twenty employees of Macomb County District Court have voted to join Council 25. In Scio Township near Ann Arbor, 12 public works employees also voted to join the council.

New Mexico

Thirty employees of the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority—the 911 dispatcher for Doña Ana County—voted to join Council 18.

New York

Fifty social service workers employed by Catholic Charities in New York City have joined DC 1707.

Ohio

More than 200 employees of Clark County Department of Job and Family Services have voted to join Council 8.

South Dakota

Eighty-six non-salaried employees of the city of Yankton have voted to join Council 59. The new members work throughout the city, including the library, streets and parks, and public works.
