AFSCME Brings Presidential Classroom Winners to Washington, D.C.

Eight high-school-age children of AFSCME members spent March 9-16 in the nation's capital as recipients of AFSCME's Presidential Classroom Scholarships. Presidential Classroom is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that brings high school students to Washing-ton, D.C., to give them an up-close view of our political system, including labor's role in national leadership. Applications for scholarships are received in January, and must be from children of AFSCME members who are high school juniors and seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA.Winners are selected from among eligible applicants by lottery.

This year's winners are Shivan Mehta of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., son of Local 1000's Urwashi Mehta; Michael Paulhus of Metairie, La., son of Local 27's Raymond Paulhus; Vivian Hofler of Chesapeake, Va., daughter of Local 3935's Ernestine Wheeler; Melanie Enge of Annadale, Minn., daughter of Local 1719's Dean Enge; Alric Meyers of Kealakekua, Hawaii, son of Local 152's Lori Cannon; Gayle Gasner of Hagaman, N.Y., daughter of Local 1000's Elaine Gasner; Jennifer Bishop of Gardendale, Ala., daughter of Local 3883's G.A. Bishop; and Anthony Schmid of Lake Elsinore, Calif., son of Local 1199's Karen Schmid.
