Guess Who Supports "Paycheck Protection"?
Guess what? California clothing manufacturer Guess? Inc. has contributed $25,000 to the campaign for "Paycheck Protection." Government inspectors have found that Guess? has often used sweatshop contractors. And in March, the company agreed to pay over $113,000 in back wages to Guess? workers wrongfully fired for union activity, according to the National Labor Relations Board.
So whose paychecks is Guess? protecting? Not those of workers.
Guess? and other Paycheck Deception supporters — including right-wing politicians, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers — are simply trying to stop unions from fighting for workers' rights: fair wages, decent benefits, a safe workplace. After all, if it weren't for unions, every worker could become a sweatshop worker.
