LOS ANGELES

Four members of the city’s Recreation and Parks Department were among a large group of new union and community activists honored at a "town hall" meeting in early February.

Held under the title of "Respect Work, Strengthen Family," this was the second in a series of 20 such events that will be staged nationwide to publicize a positive agenda of union and family issues. This one kicked off the AFL-CIO annual executive council winter meeting.

The AFSCME Council 36 foursome: Organizing Director Karleen George, Organizer Saad Mohammad, and Recreation Assistants Kathy Peters and Erika Frelot.

They helped organize 1,700 of their part-time rec and parks co-workers last June as a new local within the union. It was the largest group of Los Angeles City workers to organize in 20 years.
