Fight, Fight, AFSCME U.!

KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS

Union activists here have supported their university — that is, AFSCME U.

Members from Local 2794 (Council 31) are selling T-shirts that say: "AFSCME University — Knowledge Through Experience." From sales of the shirts, the unit is donating half of the proceeds to Council 31's Public Employees Organized to Promote Legislative Equality (PEOPLE) program, with the remaining money going to its own program. The local purchased the tops from a union shop — Freckles Graphics Employees, Local 3412 (Council 62).

"We just thought it was a great idea to give back to our leaders, who have taught us so much about unionism and solidarity over the years," says Don Petre, the Local 2794 executive board member who's spearheading the fundraiser. "The council has always been good about telling its members how important the PEOPLE program is, and how the program has to be there so that we can inform people about the importance of our jobs."
