Prayers & Protests
CHICAGO
Close to 1,000 Resurrection Health Care (RHC) employees and supporters from dozens of Illinois AFSCME locals gathered at Saint Viator Church for a mass and rally on May 2 to support the workers' struggle for justice. For more than a year now, these employees have been working to form a union with AFSCME Council 31. But RHC management has fiercely opposed their unionizing efforts.
"We should be able to talk about forming a union and decide whether we want it or not," says Shirley Brown, a veteran RHC housekeeper. "It's time that workers are treated fairly and allowed their right to a voice at work."
Speaking at the rally, Pres. Gerald W. McEntee said: "How in God's name can you work in the health care field and not receive decent health care from the employer?"
