Michigan Council 25 Staff Rep. Leslie Carter, former member of Local 1667, is the recipient of the 2005 Joey Parisi Memorial Scholarship, which covers one year's participation in the B.A. program at the National Labor College and is renewable for one year.

The program, established to honor the late, long-time AFSCME organizer, is targeted to the needs of full-time local, council, and International union staff and local union officers with substantial organizing responsibilities.

Those wishing to be considered for the 2006 scholarship must submit completed applications for the National Labor College — including the essay required for the scholarship — postmarked no later than Nov. 15, 2005. For more information or to request an application, write to National Labor College, 10000 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, Md. 20903-1706 or call 1-800-462-4237.

In New Mexico, Local 1461 (Council 18) members Patrick Derieg and Rob Trombley have won the 2005 Nadra Floyd Scholarships, set up to recognize the accomplishments of the late organizer who started out as a rank-and-file activist. Derieg is a heavy equipment mechanic; Trombley was a heavy equipment operator, but he was recently hired as a Council 18 representative/organizer. The awards of $1,000 each are applied to tuition, books and housing at the National Labor College. They may be renewed for a second year. The deadline to apply for the 2006 Nadra Floyd Scholarship is Dec. 1, 2005. For more information, write AFSCME's Department of Education and Leadership Training, 1625 L St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036-5687, call (202) 429-1250, or visit www.afscme.org.
