NEW YORK CITY
Helena Bradley, a teacher and member of Local 95 (DC 1707), read about Union Plus Mortgage and Real Estate (an AFSCME Advantage program) here in the pages of Public Employee. That made at least one part of her and her husband's "journey toward our goal of home ownership" easier, she says. Finding the right place was more difficult — "due to the specific type of house needed to accommodate our daughter who is wheelchair bound."
Bradley joins the scores of AFSCME members who have gotten lower rates and more personalized service while purchasing a new home or refinancing an existing one.
Buying a new home is serious business. Local 2627 (DC 37) member Curtis Izen calls it "a combination of anxiety and trust." The AFSCME endorsement gave him the necessary feeling of trust to move ahead. By responding to questionnaires about their experience, Izen and Bradley received "Welcome to Your First Home" awards: $500 grocery gift certificates they can use in stores where the workers are represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers, AFL-CIO.
