Organizing for Power
From state to state, workers are organizing with AFSCME for a voice on the job. Here are some recent victories:
CONNECTICUT
In the Town of Hamden, 104 police officers voted to join Council 15, rejecting a rival union. Fourteen Cheshire public library employees joined Council 4.
MARYLAND
Some 1,300 personal home care providers in Montgomery County and Baltimore have won collective bargaining rights through card check as part of AFSCME's Maryland Quality Home Care Campaign. The providers, who are independent contractors, have been organizing for more than two years to establish a union with AFSCME.
NEW YORK
Twenty-four Head Start employees at the Northside Early Childhood Center in Manhattan joined DC 1707.
OHIO
A 66-member unit of fire and police communications officers employed by the city of Toledo voted for Council 8, rejecting a rival union by better than a 2-to-1 margin.
WISCONSIN
Twelve Cedarburg wastewater treatment-plant workers joined Local 108 (Council 40).
