And the Winner Is...Andrew Lyons
The University of Wisconsin student is the 1996 recipient of the $20,000 Jerry Clark Memorial Scholarship.
Andrew Lyons hit the jackpot.
Last July Lyons became eligible along with some 100 other AFSCME members' kids for the Jerry Clark Scholarship. Their names were tossed into a hat for the lottery drawing, and Lyons emerged the winner.
Lyons won the award August 1 after Jeff MacDonald, acting executive director of the George Meany Center for Labor Studies, drew his name.
He will receive $10,000 in each of his junior and senior years to cover tuition and books. He will also serve as an intern at AFSCME headquarters the summer between his junior and senior years.
Like all the applicants, Lyons met eligibility qualifications: college sophomore with a major in political science, grade point average of 3.0 or better, and a parent who is an active AFSCME member.
AFSCME Wisconsin Council 40 Exec. Director Bob Lyons said: "I still can't believe it--it's great. Andrew's been helping me with campaign activities since he was five. Thanks to the International Union, he can now learn more about politics."
AFSCME's Education Department will accept applications for next year's scholarship beginning March 15, 1997 and ending July 1, 1997. The 1997 recipient will be announced August 1. Your child could be next year's winner.
