Big Hand for Brother Culen

By

Retired AFSCME International Vice Pres. Steve Culen and his wife's visit to an elderly woman one Thanksgiving would turn out to be the most memorable in his work for Little Brothers.

"She was confined to a wheelchair and hadn't been out of the house for months," Culen said. "At one point, the woman looked up from eating, cried and said, 'Do you know how bad it is to be alone?'" Those words, said Culen, made him realize the great importance of the organization.

Culen became a national board member of Little Brothers--Friends of the Elderly in 1990 and has served as national president since 1993. It's a non-profit international organization dedicated to assisting the elderly who are isolated and lonely.

Little Brothers programs include visiting, medical and other transportation, shopping assistance, emergency food pantries, birthday and holiday parties, and various social activities and outings. Culen emphasized that Little Brothers does everything in the spirit of friendship: "For us, how we do something is as important as what we do."
