'Clark' Winner Announced

By

Ann Arbor, Michigan
Kristin Palmer has been selected as the latest winner of the Jerry Clark Memorial Scholarship.

Palmer, a junior at the University of Michigan, received $10,000 toward her tuition. Since 1990, the program has awarded that amount annually for a political science major's junior and senior years of study, in memory of long-time Political Action Department Director Jerry Clark. Like past recipients, Palmer will also have the opportunity to intern at AFSCME headquarters in the Political Action Department.

Palmer, who plans on attending law school after graduation, is the daughter of a Ohio Civil Service Employees Association/AFSCME Local 11 member, Gregg Palmer, a highway worker with the Ohio Department of Transportation in Erie County.

Who is eligible? Any political science major in his or her sophomore year of study with a 3.0 grade point average or better who is enrolled in a full-time, four-year degree program in any accredited college or university. Also: Their parent, legal guardian or financially responsible grandparent must be an AFSCME member.

The application deadline is July 1 of each year. The name of each qualified student is placed in a blank, sealed envelope and then in a box, with the winner selected by lottery at a special meeting of the AFSCME Scholarship Committee.
