And the Winner Is ...

By

Shannon Seybold, daughter of Wisconsin Local 2748 (Council 24) member Larry Seybold, has won this year's Jerry Clark Memorial Scholarship.

A 21-year-old political science major at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Seybold will receive $10,000 per year for her junior and senior years of college. "I am deeply committed to my country and involving myself in politics," she said in her application. "I enjoy helping others and taking a stand for those who are unable to speak for themselves." The scholarship, plus an internship with the International's Political Action Department, is awarded to a single recipient chosen by lottery. Eligible applicants must be sophomores enrolled in a full-time, four-year degree program in an accredited college or university; major in political science; have a grade point average of at least 3.0; and have a parent or legal guardian (or responsible grandparent) who is an AFSCME member.

Established in 1990, the scholarship honors Jerry Clark, who directed the International union's Political Action program for nearly two decades. Applicants for next year's award can make submissions between March 15 and July 1, 2006. Winners will be notified in August. For more information, contact the Department of Education and Leadership Training at (202) 429-1250.

It's not too late to submit applications this year for two other scholarships:

Dec. 31, 2005, is the deadline to apply for the 2006 AFSCME Family Scholarship. Grants of $2,000 a year (up to four years) go to 13 graduating high school seniors who are children (or financially dependent grandchildren) of active or retired AFSCME members. Winners will be announced March 31, 2006. Obtain an application from AFSCME's website, or from the Department of Education and Leadership Training, or the telephone number mentioned above.

Jan. 31, 2006, is the last day to apply for the 2006 Union Plus Scholarship program. Cash awards, ranging from $500 to $4,000, can be used to defray the cost of a two-year trade or technical school, community college, or four-year college or university. This year, the program granted 120 scholarships to students representing 40 unions, including 10 to AFSCME members/family members. The next winners will be notified on May 31.
