Remembering Parisi
AFSCME establishes Joey Parisi Memorial Scholarship.
Joey Parisi was an organizer's organizer. After his death last October, the International created a scholarship in his honor. Pres. Gerald W. McEntee told the delegates, "He was the kind of person who could walk into a room and light it up. You could hand Joey the tough ones, and you knew that you'd get the best that anybody could give. He will truly be missed."
The scholarship will enable a qualified full-time AFSCME organizer to work toward a four-year college degree in labor studies through the George Meany Center in cooperation with Antioch University.
In his 20 years in the field for AFSCME, Parisi handled special assignments in 52 different places.
Parisi's nephew, Joe Alfonso, special assistant to New York Local 372 Pres. Charles Hughes, thanked the union on behalf of his family for remembering his uncle. "His spirit will always be alive," said Alfonso.
