LeBeau Elected International Vice President

AFSCME welcomes a new International vice president, D.C. 1707 Exec. Director Josephine “Jo” LeBeau, who was elected by New York legislative district delegates to replace the retiring Anthony Gingello.

President McEntee introduced LeBeau to the Convention as a committed Labor organizer. Throughout her 20-year career with AFSCME, LeBeau has brought thousands of health care workers into the union.

LeBeau joined AFSCME in 1965 and became a staff member in 1978, organizing home care workers. In recent years she has helped to organize workers throughout the country, including those at the Little Flower Children Services in New York City. Under her leadership, D.C. 1707 has begun an innovative program to organize home-based child care providers using computer links.

LeBeau represents AFSCME in the Coalition of Labor Union Women. Last year she received the Sojourner Truth Award from the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists for her involvement with the South African Workers’ College training program for working women.

The new International vice president told the Convention, “I look forward to representing the members of Council 82, Council 66, Council 35 and D.C. 1707.
