There’s Something About Medicare
Washington, DC
Yes, there’s something about Medicare that makes it irresistible for some arch-conservatives in the nation’s capitol, to keep from robbing it.
Congress is rushing through an $800 billion tax cut for the rich and big business at the expense of Medicare, Social Security and education.
A vote for this irresponsible, short-sighted tax cut is a vote against strengthening Medicare and Social Security for working families. It is also a vote against adding a Medicare prescription drug benefit and a vote against allowing future investments in education and other domestic priorities.
The bill has a lot of goodies for the affluent, including billions of dollars in tax savings for big corporations like defense contractors, multinational banks and insurance companies.
The lion’s share of the tax cut bonus will go to the wealthiest Americans. Most working families will derive little, if any, benefit from the measure.
President Clinton has promised to veto the bill because he believes it is fiscally irresponsible and it would return the nation to the reckless budget deficits of the 1980s.
