AFSCME Advantage a Real Advantage to Mounsey

Khalia Mounsey remembers doing her homework by the light of a single candle "because there was no money to pay the electric bill." Today, with a 4.0 high school grade-point average, she’s on her way to Duke University, where she’ll take pre-med courses with the help of a $2,000 AFSCME Advantage/Union Plus Scholarship.

For the past 10 years, Khalia has watched as her mother, Mary Davis, studied to earn the bachelor’s and master’s degrees needed to get the job she loves: social worker in child protective services, a position represented by Maryland Local 112 (Council 92).

Khalia is one of 20 children of AFSCME members awarded scholarships ranging from $500 to $4,000. (See list of AFSCME recipients.)

How to Apply

— AFSCME Advantage Scholarships are funded and administered by Union Privilege and Household Credit Services, which are part of the Union Plus Credit Card Program. Scholarship applicants must be AFSCME members and/or their spouses and dependent children. They do not have to be credit card holders.

Applications for the 2002 awards will be available in September 2001. Send apostcard with your name, return address and telephone number, also noting your AFSCME affiliation, to: Union Plus Scholarship Program, P.O. Box 34800, Washington, D.C. 20043-4800, or download an application from the Union Privilege Web site:www.unionprivilege.orgThe application deadline is Jan. 31, 2002.
