Hanging Tough

By

PHILADELPHIA

They gathered in Philadelphia's Love Park — more than 1,500 of them — but there was anger, not love, in their voices as they chanted and waved picket signs. Protesting municipal workers from AFSCME Councils 33 and 47 wanted Mayor John Street and the city council to feel the heat. "They have allowed our contract to expire, expecting us to make concessions," said Charles Gaskins, Local 403 president (Council 33). "But we intend to fight for what we deserve until we get a fair contract." A few weeks later, talks resumed. Workers are negotiating for a three-year agreement with the city, which includes wage increases and better health care benefits.
