Statement by AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on Passage of the Specter/Harkin Amendment

Bush and Allies in Congress Need To Get Their Priorities Straight

Today’s vote to restore much-needed funding to health, education and low-income programs was a victory for America’s families and a major defeat for George W. Bush.

The lawmakers who stood up for working families sent President Bush a strong message: Cutting vital public services to give tax breaks to the wealthy would take our country in the wrong direction.

AFSCME’s 1.6 million members provide the vital services that make America happen. With members in hundreds of different occupations – from nurses to corrections officers, child care providers to sanitation workers – AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and prosperity and opportunity for all working families.
