Statement by AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on Defeat of Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Conference Report

Today's defeat of the right wing's mean-spirited Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill shows that moderate Republicans understand that uncompassionate conservatism just doesn't sell back home.

This victory for poor and middle class families could be the beginning of the end for the Republican leadership's agenda of gutting vital public services to pay for tax cuts for the super rich. We urge moderate Republicans to continue standing up for America's families.

AFSCME’s 1.6 million members provide the vital services that make America happen. With members in hundreds of different occupations – from nurses to corrections officers, child care providers to sanitation workers – AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and prosperity and opportunity for all working families.
