Tips on Choosing School-Age Care

In addition to looking at other quality indicators, such as a sufficient number of well-trained staff, ask for the following questions about school-age programs:

  • Can your child go by bus or walk safely and easily to and from school and the before-and-after care program?

  • Is a nutritious snack offered after school?

  • Does the program provide the chance to unwind and relax after school or is the program jammed with activities?

  • Is there a quiet space to work on homework?

  • Is there space for different activities, such as naps or resting, cooking and eating, open and active play, dramatic events, and creative arts?

  • Is the program appropriate for all ages served?

  • Will your child have friends attending the same program?

  • Is care available for school holidays and early dismissal days?

  • What are their plans for bad weather/snow days?
