Support Grows for Organizing Campaign at Resurrection Health Care

AFSCME nurses from New York, Ohio, Michigan, California, Illinois and Connecticut returned to Chicago for a second round of one-on-one organizing with workers at Resurrection Health Care, an eight-hospital system in the city. In October, 15 AFSCME members visited 180 employees to talk to them about the benefits of joining a union. AFSCME Council 31 and Resurrection employees began their organizing campaign in March.

The organizing effort at Catholic-sponsored Resurrection has gained the support of community leaders, state legislators and some priests. The employees recently sponsored a legislative forum on health care issues. The lawmakers who attended the forum pledged to work to pass legislation that will meet the campaign's goals. And in November, 15 priests held a Day of Prayer that attracted over 200 attendees. The priests became sympathetic to the organizing efforts after employees educated them about problems they face and management's reaction to their organizing campaign.
