NEW MEXICO: AFSCME Retiree Chapter 18 Vice-Pres. Ernest Chavez was recently appointed to the New Mexico House of Representatives to fill a vacated seat representing District 12. During the regular Bernalillo County Commission meeting on September 28, District Judge Michael Kavanaugh administered the oath. On Nov. 2, Rep. Chavez will be running for the District 12 seat unopposed.

Chavez retired from the City of Albuquerque in 1996. An AFSCME member since 1971, Ernie served on Local 624 Blue Collar Workers' executive board, as longtime Local 624 secretary, and as the founding vice president of Chapter 18. He also served in the Army National Guard for 28 years, retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class. This year, Chavez was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Boston and was recently recognized by the Central Labor Council for his contributions to the New Mexico labor movement.
