Tax Credits Where They're DueLow-wage workers may qualify for tax credits up to $4,140 this year through the Earned Income Tax Credit and the new Child Tax Credit (CTC). The EITC benefits working families with children and low-income workers without children. Last year, more than 19 million workers received over $31 billion through this credit. The CTC is worth up to $600 for each dependent child — in addition to any EITC benefits. Even families earning too little to owe income tax can receive the credit as a refund check from the IRS. Immigrant workers with an individual taxpayer-identification number can also claim the CTC. For help with filing, check for free taxpayer-assistance programs in your area, or call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and ask about scheduled VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) programs. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities also has detailed information on its Web site. |
