Maryland Rallies Around Contract
Some 300 AFSCME corrections workers rallied in Annapolis on January 26 to demand that the state legislature fully fund their contract and improve the pension plan for state workers.
This is the first contract for AFSCME Maryland’s 8,000 corrections workers. It was ratified this fall with an astounding 98 percent yes vote.
Maryland CO Valerie Hunt, a member of Local 3737 (Council 67) and of the ACU Advisory Committee, says she’s hopeful they’ll see positive action from the legislature. She points out: "It’s election year. So we’re telling legislators to pay now or they’ll pay in November."
The contract is scheduled to go into effect July 1, 1998.
