The AFSCME Education Department ignites and fuels activism and leadership by creating a culture of collaborative learning; developing members, leaders and staff as educators and change agents; and using new technologies to expand the reach of our programs. This position is responsible for implementing this mission by designing and leading various education programs as assigned and for developing and/or revising classroom and online curricula and materials.

DUTIES: Incumbent is responsible for implementing this mission by designing and conducting classroom and online education programs as assigned and for developing and/or revising the department’s written materials. Drafts, revises and/or edits all department written materials, including curricula, handouts, exercises, and online materials. Prepares weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on all activities that can be incorporated into departmental summaries. Collects data, writes and edits program reports as requested. Writes content for the department webpage and other promotional materials. Assists HQEC staff with implementation of scholarship program for student activists in addition to implementation of other departmental programs, including Next Wave Program. Assists with design and teaching of online classes. Assists FECs with various training programs as needed. Serves as a resource for AFSCME staff and regional/affiliate educators by making workshops and other training curricula available online. Works with national union or affiliate staff and leaders to identify training objectives and design specific educational programs as assigned.  In some cases, trains affiliate activists and staff to conduct programs. Conducts training in a variety of settings, including field training and one-on-one coaching.  Makes logistical arrangements associated with educational programs when necessary. Assists with nationally targeted organizing campaigns and political action campaigns in the field that may require extended travel. Frequent evening work and weekend work is required. Performs other related work as assigned. This position is based at AFSCME Headquarters.

REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in labor relations, education or organization development and three to five years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.  Knowledge of adult learning styles and teaching techniques. Experience with learning management systems. Ability to create online training modules. Ability to coordinate and develop web-based training and meetings. Ability to select or develop appropriate e-learning techniques and resources. Advanced capabilities with e-learning software.  Strong web authoring skills in HTML and familiarity and other web-based software and new media applications. Skilled in the use of all forms of multi-media visual aids. Ability to collaborate with subject matter experts to develop online content and training modules. Ability to develop goals and work plans and execute projects effectively within a prescribed plan of action. Ability to meet deadlines, measure progress, and evaluate program effectiveness.  Experience as a union organizer, union representative or community activist desired.  Ability to travel and work extended work hours needed.  A valid driver’s license is required.
