The AFSCME Education Department ignites and fuels activism and leadership by creating a culture of collaborative learning; developing members, leaders and staff as educators and change agents; and using new technologies to expand the reach of our programs. This position is responsible for implementing this mission by designing and leading various education programs as assigned and for developing and/or revising classroom and online curricula and materials.

DUTIES: Coordinates and assists with women’s leadership development training and activities. Assists with support of the Women’s Advisory Committee. Serves as moderator for social networking communications. Assists with implementation of other programs in the department. Designs women’s leadership development classroom/online curricula and companion resources, utilizing various popular education techniques, as well as outreach materials. Assists with planning and implementation of national union and affiliate educator program, where staff and leaders are trained as trainers. Coordinates the scheduling of and planning for all assigned education and training programs, which can include brief presentations, day-long or weekend seminars, web-based training, workshops at conferences and week-long programs. Works with national union or affiliate staff and leaders who request training to identify training objectives and plan training programs. Works with national union or affiliate staff and leaders to develop education plans for particular campaigns (e.g. organizing campaigns, strike preparation, contract campaigns). Assists with planning national union conferences. Prepares weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on all activities that can be incorporated into departmental summaries. Collects data, writes and edits departmental and program reports as requested. Makes logistical arrangements associated with educational programs when necessary. Assists with nationally targeted organizing campaigns and political action campaigns as needed that may require extended travel. Performs other duties as assigned in support of departmental activities.

REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in labor relations, education or organization development and five to seven years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Thorough knowledge of adult and popular education theory and practice. Knowledge of labor unions and the associated training of activists, leaders, and staff. Ability to develop both online and traditional training curricula and conduct training presentations in a variety of settings and via the Web. Ability to select or develop appropriate teaching materials. Ability to use all forms of multi-media visual aids. Ability to use computer and associated software, including web-based applications. Ability to develop work plans, work with minimal direction and execute projects effectively within a prescribed plan of action. Ability to meet deadlines, measure progress, and evaluate program effectiveness. Excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively. Experience as a union organizer, union representative or community activist. Ability to travel and work extended work hours needed. A valid driver’s license is required.
