The Kansas Organization of State Employees (KOSE) is a union for executive branch state employees, and the largest union of state employees in Kansas. KOSE’s mission is to make real improvements on issues that matter to state employees, such as compensation, pay equity, healthcare and retirement security, workplace safety, career development, and having a voice on the job. KOSE’s priorities are driven by the ideas and input of KOSE members
KOSE organizes for economic and social justice in the workplace and advocates for working families through political action and legislative advocacy. KOSE represents a diverse group of state workers including social workers, KDOT, administrative assistants, custodians and Corrections Officers.
DUTIES:
The Executive Director is responsible for the management of all matters pertaining to the operations of KOSE. This position is also responsible for all of the local’s communications and media to internal and external audiences. Additionally, this position manages the Union’s staff on a day to day basis.
Directs staff in implementing the goals and policies of the Union and its executive board. Implements policies and procedures for the administrative operations of KOSE. Develops and implements the Union’s internal and external communications strategies in such areas as contract negotiations, member benefits, politics, legislation and policy. Serves as the Union’s official spokesperson in all capacities, including contract negotiations. Develops and implements the Union’s legislative program, including lobbying on behalf of the membership. Prepares and submitsan annual operating budget for approval by the Executive board.
REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a BA or BS degree and have at least three years experience in labor relations or other relevant union employment. Thorough knowledge of legislative actions, contract negotiations, and effective communication capabilities. Ability to work well with a diverse group of union members, other labor organizations, public officials and community and constituent groups. Working knowledge of computers and technology, budgeting, and administrative processes and procedures. Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise personnel towards position goals and to work within deadlines. Excellent oral and written communications skills.
