The AFSCME Education Department prepares members, leaders, and staff to effectively lead the labor movement into the future. We shape and build powerful local unions to be lasting vehicles for a just society that works for the common good and values workers’ rights and dignity in the workplace. We ignite and fuel activism and leadership through interactive teaching methods and the use of new technologies to expand the reach of our programs.

DUTIES: 

  • Plans, designs, coordinates, and conducts education and training programs; develops program content; develops and/or orders materials.
  • Works with affiliate and national union leaders and staff to develop education plans.
  • Prepares and conducts training programs for affiliate activists and staff.
  • Prepares weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on all activities that can be incorporated into departmental summaries.
  • Conducts training in a variety of settings, including field training and one-on-one coaching.
  • Makes logistical arrangements associated with educational programs including turnout, contracting with training facilities, and requesting audio/visual and other equipment needs.
  • Creates, modifies, and revises program materials to address specific needs. Includes appropriate examples, role-play scenarios, exercises, case studies, and discussion questions. For new/special courses, researches subject areas, designs curricula, and prepares/produces materials to be used.
  • Assists with nationally targeted organizing and political action campaigns in the field, which require extended travel.
  • Collaborate with other departments in the development/implementation of trainings, workshops, and programs.
  • Performs other related work as assigned. 

REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a minimum of five (5) years related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience as an organizer, staff representative, or labor educator.
  • Ability to use computer and associated software, including web-based applications.
  • Ability to develop goals and work plans and execute projects effectively within a prescribed plan of action.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, measure progress, and evaluate program effectiveness.

Travel/Work Hours:

  • Extended hours including weekends required.
  • Extensive travel and a valid driver’s license required.
